Sharur district is situated in the west of the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic and borders with Iran in the south. Landscape in the north and east of the district is mountainous. Daralayazy mountain range takes this territory. The highest point in the region is Galingaya mountain (2775 m). Climate is semi-desert, summer is arid. Average temperature in January is from +3 C to +6 C; precipitations in a year total to 200-400 mm. Rivers running in the territory of the district (Arpachay etc.) relate to the Basin of Araz River. Their waters are widely used in irrigation, so Arpachay storage pool constructed for this purpose. Flora, mainly, is represented by the semi-desert species. Such animals as mountain goat, mouflon, wolf, fox, hare, boar etc. live here. Partridge, pleasant etc. are among the birds.
There are many archeological monuments in the territory of the district. Stone and obsidian implements of primitive relating to the epoch of Mustier were found in Gazma cave in 1987-1990. Ancient settlements of Bronze Age were located along the banks of Araz and Arpachay rivers. Samples of skillful made engraved dishes were found here, in Shahtakhi settlement. As to archeological monuments, Middle Age bridge in Arpachay River, mausoleum of Garabaglar (XII-XIII centuries), Gosha-minaret (XIV century), mausoleum of Guti-khatun, Middle Age mosques, sanctuaries, caravanserais have been saved here. Archeological digs conducted near the villages of Vermaziyar, Arbatan, Garahasanli, Babeki, Kosajan confirmed the suppositions on existence of ancient settlement of Kuluklar, Kohna Arabatan, Kohnakend, Kultapa, and Kuluk here. Objects of the home utensils, fragments of earthenware and enamelware with the fretted ornaments and painting were found here: jugs, vases, pitchers and other objects. Administrative center of the region is Sharur, new city established in connection with construction of the railway. There are two parks, stadium, museum, mosques, and monument-memorial to the shahids, cinema and two hotels in the city. Large agriculture croplands are around the city.
There is an interesting old city to other side of the railway with several ancient mosques, bath and good bazaar.
